In the ever-evolving book publishing landscape, aspiring authors are faced with a myriad of choices and challenges. Obviously, a major decision is: How much does it cost to self-publish a book?

Cost of self-publishing a book

Unlike many other self-publishing service providers that offer cookie-cutter solutions, we believe that every author’s book is unique. Consequently, we don’t offer ‘one-size-fits-all’ package prices to self-publish a book. Instead, we tailor our professional services to cater to each author’s requirements by supplying a customised quote proposal.

Recognising the differing writing abilities of authors, as well as their overall objective for their  book, we’re committed to providing a bespoke self-publishing service. This involves evaluating each manuscript on its own merits so clients receive the individual support and attention their book project truly deserves.

Our pricing structure is based on the specific attributes of each manuscript. This procedure empowers authors to bring their written work to life without needing to sacrifice quality or break the bank.

A flexible approach to book publishing costs

We take a transparent and flexible approach to the total cost for our professional book editing, internal page formatting/typesetting, cover design and publishing advice/mentoring services. All our quotes are supplied in written format and include a detailed explanation of the scope and fee range for each project stage.

Fees for editing and proofreading services

As a general guide, our book editing and proofreading quotes are intricately linked to the total number of words and the overall quality of the written content.

Editing and proofreading costs are based on a ‘cents-per-word’ model and range between 1–4 cents/word. For most full-scale editing projects, the average total cost is 2.5–3.5 cents per word.

In this way,  you can expect to pay for the precise level of editorial assistance your written work requires. For instance, we would charge 1 cent a word to proofread writing that is high-quality, whereas the combined editing/proofreading fee for a manuscript that is poorly structured or contains numerous errors might be a total of 4 cents a word.

Fee for book formatting/typesetting services

Similar to our editing services, our internal page formatting/typesetting quotes cater to clients’ individual requirements. The fee for this service is based on the total number of words in the manuscript, as well as the inclusion of various graphic elements such as photos, illustrations, diagrams, charts, tables and textboxes.

For more information about our internal page formatting/typesetting services (including ballpark fee ranges), please refer to the Typesetting webpage.

Fee for book cover design services

In contrast to the editing and typesetting stages which require highly customised quoting, our book cover design services are offered as ‘package’ prices. Fees for professional cover design services are calculated in accordance with the genre/purpose of the final published book.

Our cover design fees range from $AU250–$AU400 for children’s book projects; $AU350–$550 for family history/memoir book projects; $AU650–$AU800 for business and commercial nonfiction book projects; and $AU750–$AU900 for fiction and short story book projects.

Ballpark book costs for self-publishing projects

To provide authors with a ballpark estimate of likely costs for their self-publishing project, our fee structure takes into account different book types/genres.

  • CHILDREN’S BOOK PROJECTS – Project fee typically ranges between $AU1,000 and $AU2,000.
  • FAMILY HISTORY AND MEMOIR PROJECTS (for family and friends only) – Project fee typically ranges between $AU3,000 to $AU4,000.
  • FICTION, BUSINESS AND COMMERCIAL NONFICTION BOOK PROJECTS (usually include professional editing/proofreading services) – Project fee typically ranges between $AU4,500 and $AU5,500.

It’s important to note these ballpark figures to self-publish your book are general estimates only. At the end of the day, the unique characteristics of your draft manuscript, as well as your publishing objectives will determine the final project costs.

Regardless, we always inform authors about potential expenses at the outset of their project. This in turn helps with budget planning and avoiding any unexpected expenses on their publication journey.

Costs associated with post-publication services

Our initial quote proposals don’t factor in the costs associated with any post-publication services such as book printing or ebook conversion/distribution. This is because authors have widely differing requirements in terms of quantities of locally printed books they want to order, plus whether they wish to proceed with ebook conversion/distribution, and Print on Demand services via Amazon and/or IngramSpark.

For more information on these post-publication services, please refer to the Book Printing webpage, and also the Ebook Conversion webpage.

Supporting your book publishing journey

Beyond these financial considerations, our pricing structure reflects our commitment to creating a collaborative relationship with our author clients. Recognising the emotional and creative investment that goes into producing a book, we aim to ensure the publishing process is as stress-free and rewarding as possible.

During the past ten years, we’ve guided numerous authors and taken part in the publication of more than 100 books so we’re highly experienced in the ‘ins and outs’ of the publishing process. For this reason, all our quote proposals include a publishing mentoring fee for expert advice/support at every stage of our clients’ book projects.
